Tips for Healthcare Consumers

  • Write down your symptoms, pain location and questions before you go to your doctor's office. Be prepared and think about your health concerns so that the time you are with your doctor is well spent.
  • Bring someone with you for non-routine appointments and consultations. The individual can assist you in remembering the information you hear.

You may purchase Jacque's booklet "Communication Breakdown" - It May be Hazardous to Your Health. Please go to the Products page. This valuable purchase will assist you in all of your healthcare experiences!

  • Ask for clarification from the healthcare professional if you feel you have misunderstood the information given to you. This may be in the form of the physician verbally repeating the information, or the nurse writing down specific points for you to remember.
  • Request any brochures or other printed materials on tests or procedures being recommended to you so you can refer to them later..
  • Keep a small notebook with you, especially if you are receiving care from several physicians. This will help you stay organized and be aware of your many appointments. It also can be a place to write down your questions and medication list.
  • Keep a current list of your medications with you and provide an updated list for your family, healthcare proxy and caregivers.
