Healthcare Coaching - Individuals, Families and Caregivers

Coaching is a process of working together with me, to help you gain knowledge and practice effective communication skills to manage your healthcare or the care of someone you support and love.

The focus is on identifying "information gaps" so that when making an important health related or medical decision, effective communication can occur. I can coach you regardless of the medical diagnosis, chronic condition or health related issues you have since I am coaching you in the area of communication.

The goal is for you to make the best medical decisions you can. This occurs when you understand the information you receive and know if more information is needed. We can be stressed, distracted and overwhelmed when trying to gather all of the medical information given to us. I can partner with you during this time so you can participate more fully in your care or the care of the person you support.

Value to you:

  • Learn to take charge of the information related to your health or the health of the person you love and support
  • Understand what questions to ask for better understanding of the medical information you are being given
  • Make informed treatment decisions because you have filled in the "gaps"
  • Organize your thinking during the challenging and stressful time of illness
  • Ask that the professionals talk with one another and coordinate their plans on your behalf so you do not feel that you are the only one who is trying to "get the whole picture"
  • Gain communication skills you can carry to your future medical interactions and hospitalizations
  • Be able to schedule your coaching in the comfort of your home or around your busy schedule, since coaching is primarily provided over the telephone

Coaching Details:

  • Sessions range from 45-60 minutes on the phone. Typically I work with clients 2-3 times a month, but more frequent sessions can be scheduled if requested. Sometimes one month of coaching brings you to a place where you can communicate more effectively.
  • I will accommodate your request for an appointment as quickly as possible especially if a medical crisis has prompted you to contact me.
  • I can coach you regardless of the medical diagnosis or chronic health related issue you have since I am coaching you in the area of communication.
  • I do not give medical advice. I teach you how to ask for what it is you need to know, so that you can make the most informed decisions about your health.

Client examples:

  • An adult son who needed to prepare questions and concerns before meeting with a team of specialists regarding his dad's care and end-of-life options.
  • An adult daughter who learned to coordinate the information from many physicians when her 86 year old father experienced multiple treatments, hospitalizations and medication changes.
  • A wife struggling to understand information about her husband's new cancer diagnosis and who worried that his early signs of dementia would prevent him from fully understanding what the doctors were saying.
  • A middle-aged man whose family history placed him at risk for several medical conditions but was frustrated his doctor was not "hearing" his concerns and questions about preventative measures.
  • A brother who was struggling to absorb and integrate all of the information being given to him about his sister's stroke, so he could make the best decisions about her placement in a nursing home.

Coaching - Physicians, Healthcare and Educational Professionals

Coaching is a process of working together with me to identify how you can become a more effective communicator in both your personal and professional interactions. This process reflects your commitment to continual improvement, growth and change. It also reflects a commitment to partner with another individual to offer quality service, care or programming.

Create an opportunity for yourself to improve or enhance your skills so you provide benefit and value to those individuals who expect and need you to be clear, open, organized and sensitive when communicating.

Value for you:

  • Understand the critical components involved in effective communication and recognize why communication can breakdown so easily
  • Practice communication that is conducive to increasing trust by careful listening
  • Evaluate your own communication style and ask yourself, "What behaviors do I demonstrate that might be negatively influencing communication interactions?"
  • Recognize the critical role nonverbal communication plays when discussing sensitive, painful and confusing information
  • Examine your perceptions and beliefs of "your responsibility" when it comes to helping people understand the information you want them to
  • Increase your efforts to deliver information that is clear to your listener
  • Learn to recognize when your families, patients and caregivers require more options or "tools" to understand the complex concepts, terms etc.you are using. Consider using diagrams booklets, or reputable websites.
  • See value in "closing the loop" by communicating in a timely fashion with other professionals and documenting these efforts
  • Clearly communicate your expectations to other professionals when referring or using their services so their assessments, opinions and recommendations are clearly communicated back to you

The goal is to determine who is in charge of "the plan" and share it with the patient, family, professional team member or colleague.. This way information is not lost and effective communication occurs!

Coaching Details:

  • Coaching is frequently provided via the telephone, but face-to-face sessions are available upon request. Individual sessions range from 45-60 minutes, 2-3 times per month.
  • Group coaching sessions with staff or team members if requested are tailored to your specific needs and are completed on-site. Typically, group sessions are provided within an educational presentation to set the stage for the coaching process
